The coffees from the Gahahe washing station are fully cared for and it shows in their taste.
The Gahahe washing station is located in Kayanza province at an altitude of 1 800 metres above sea level and can process up to 750 tonnes of cherries per season. Gahahe is involved in a number of projects aimed at assisting and supporting farmers, including a livestock project and a number of Farmer Hub projects aimed at strengthening cooperatives and improving yields.
Although coffee cultivation is ubiquitous in Burundi, each smallholder produces a relatively small crop. The average smallholder farmer has approximately 250 trees, which are usually found in his or her garden. Each tree produces approximately 1,5 kg of cherries, while the average farmer sells about 200 to 300 kg of cherries a year. During the harvest, all the coffee is hand-picked. Most families have only 200 to 250 trees and harvesting is done almost exclusively by family members.
