The Sul de Minas region is one of the most highly regarded coffee growing areas in Brazil. Coffees from this area often rank highly in Cup of Excellence competitions
Southern Minas Gerais is one of Brazil's most productive coffee producing areas. This area, which is characterised by its hilly terrain, mild climate with an average temperature of 23 °C and high altitude, has been growing Arabica coffee since 1850. Although Sul de Minas is home to some of the largest coffee producers in Brazil, more than half of the region's producers are small and medium-sized farms. Sul de Minas accounts for an average of 30% of Brazil's coffee production.
The mountainous terrain, which reaches up to 1 400 m above sea level, is ideal for coffee growing and Sul de Minas has improved the quality of its production through investment in infrastructure and measures to promote sustainability. The most commonly grown varieties are Yellow Catuai and Mundo Novo, while some farms also grow Icatu, Obatã and Red Catuai. Most of the coffee produced is processed as Natural and the resulting cup profile is full-bodied, with low acidity and fruity aromas.
