Edward Mungai Ngugi's farm is located less than an hour from the centre of the capital Nairobi and in recent years surrounding farmers have been selling land, expanding the Nairobi suburbs. Edward loves growing coffee and will not sell his land.

The plantation grows mainly two coffee varieties - SL28 and Ruiru 11. The SL28 variety has a history dating back to the 1930s and is popular in the area because of its deep root system, which allows it to tap into deeply stored water reserves. The Ruiru 11 variety is a very young variety that has been bred to be very resistant to disease. Edward is trying to crossbreed the two varieties to reap the benefits of both coffee plants.

There is a small washing station on the farm which allows Edward to process all his coffee cherries, which are hand-picked.

From our barista's current cupping

From the very first sip, you can taste the juiciness of this coffee. The subtle sweetness of apricots and compote peaches, which is accentuated by the pleasant low bitterness of grapefruit. The acidity here is light, yet it may surprise you with a mild to moderate tartness, which comes together in the mouth in perfect balance.

I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a complete sweet and tart coffee.
